Lahti grew up in Michigan with her three sisters and two brothers, but moved briefly to Florida to study. However, she finally graduated in theater from her home, at the University of Michigan. 

In 1973 Lahti moved to New York City to get started as an actress. However, before she got her first roles, she had to earn her living as a waitress and pantomime in Central Park. Her breakthrough finally came in 1979 when she starred for a small role in “… and Justice for All” with Al Pacino committed. After that she was seen in smaller film productions.

In 1990 she won her first Golden Globe for her acting performance in the television drama Burning Destiny . Christine Lahti received a second Golden Globe in 1998 for Chicago Hope . At the time the award was presented, she was initially on the toilet and came on stage late. She then parodied this event on many occasions and in 1999 took the stage at the Golden Globes ceremony with a strip of toilet paper on her shoe.

She concentrated more on her television career and became well known to a broad audience with her role as cardiac surgeon Dr. Kathryn Austen known in “Chicago Hope – End Station Hope”. For her role, she got an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 1998, and a year earlier a Golden Globe in the same category.

Lahti is not only seen in front of the camera, but she also works as a director from time to time. For the first time, she was behind the camera during her time at “Chicago Hope”. In 1995 she received an Oscar for Best Short Film for her short film “Lieberman in Love”.
